Origin: A borrowing from Thai. Etymon: Thai Songkrant.

Etymology: < Thai Songkrant (with silent -t ), apparently ultimately < Sanskrit saṃkrānti the movement of the sun from one star sign to another, a festival celebrating this < saṃkram- to come together, (of the sun) to enter a star sign ( < saṃ- together (see Sanskrit n.) + kram- to approach) + -ti, suffix forming abstract nouns from verbs.In quot. 1727 via German †Songkraan (now Songkran).

The festival of the Thai New Year, characterized by various observances involving the pouring or splashing of water.Formerly the date of the festival was determined by the movement of the sun; it is now fixed at 13 April, with the holiday period extending for three days.
