Forms: Also 1500s–1600s sophie, 1500s–1800s sophi (1600s sofi), 1700s sophia.
Etymology: < Persian ṣafī (also ṣafawī ), the surname of the ruling dynasty of Persia from c1500 to 1736, derived from the Arabic epithet ṣafī-ud-dīn ‘purity of religion’, given to an ancestor of Ismail Safī, the founder of the dynasty. Not related to Sufi n.1, with which it has frequently been associated.
Now Historical or archaic.
1. A former title or designation of the supreme ruler of Persia; the Shah. Also Grand Sophy.
