Etymology: < soul n. + candle n.In sense 2 after Yiddish neshome licht < neshome soul ( < Hebrew nešāmā ) + licht ( < Middle High German licht light n.1).
1. In the Christian Church: one of several candles placed about the coffin at a funeral service. Now rare (historical in later use).
