Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese Sōtō.
Etymology: < Japanese Sōtō (15th cent. as Sautou; more fully Sōtō-shū Soto sect) < Middle Chinese (compare Chinese Cáodòng zōng, the name of the Chinese tradition of Buddhism upon which Soto is based).Chinese Cáodòng (formerly also Dòngcáo) was reportedly formed in Middle Chinese from elements of the (original forms of the) names of Dòngshān Liángjiè and his disciple Cáoshān Běnjì, who founded the school in the 9th cent.
One of the three principal branches of Zen Buddhism, characterized by the use of sitting meditation to achieve gradual awareness of one's own Buddha nature. Frequently as a modifier. Cf. Obaku n., Rinzai n.

1833 Chinese Repository 2 323 There are now in Japan the following sects..1. Zen; of which there are three subdivisions, viz. Rinzai, Syootoo, and Oobak, named after Chinese monks.
1893 S. Kuroda Outl. Mahâyâna vi. 24 Dôgen introduced the Sôtô sect, 2176 after Buddha, or 1227 A.D.
1917 A. K. Reischauer Stud. Japanese Buddhism iii. 117 The chief difference between the Soto and the Rinzai branches of the Zen Sect is that the former puts more weight upon book learning as a subsidiary aid to silent meditation.
