Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ἀκτῖν- , ἀκτίς , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀκτῖν-, ἀκτίς ray (see actino- comb. form) + -ism suffix.
1. The property by which light or other electromagnetic radiation causes chemical change, as in traditional photography and in photosynthesis. Also in extended use and in figurative contexts.Common in the 19th cent., but now much less common than the adjective actinic.
