单词 somalian
释义

Somalianadj.n.

Brit. /səˈmɑːlɪən/, U.S. /səˈmɑliən/, /səˈmɑljən/, /soʊˈmɑliən/, /soʊˈmɑljən/
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Perhaps partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Proper name Somalia , Somali n., -an suffix.
Etymology: < (i) Somalia (Somali Soomaaliya , Arabic al-Ṣūmāl , Italian Somalia ), the name of a region in the Horn of Africa, and later also of a country in that region (see note) + -an suffix. In early use perhaps also partly (ii) < Somali n. (especially in the name of Somaliland : see note) + -an suffix. With use as adjective compare earlier Somali adj. and Somal adj.1 With use as noun compare earlier Somali n. and Somal n.The place name is attested in some European languages from the second half of the 19th cent. (1888 or earlier in English contexts, 1889 or earlier in Italian contexts); compare post-classical Latin Somalia (1876 by a German writer, or earlier; apparently < German Somali Somali n. + classical Latin -ia -ia suffix1), perhaps after German Somaliland (1854 or earlier) or English Somaliland (R. Burton 1856); compare also slightly earlier the Somali country (used by a German speaker in quot. 1839 at Somali adj.). In 1884, the northern part of the region was brought under British rule as the British Somaliland Protectorate; in 1889, the southern part of the region came under Italian rule as Italian Somaliland (Italian Somalia italiana); these were combined in 1960 to form an independent country. The Somali name Soomaaliya is a borrowed < a European language, perhaps via Arabic Ṣūmāliyā.
