Etymology: In the α. and β. forms directly < Italian soffitta feminine and soffitto (masculine), < sof- (Latin sub) under + past participle of figgere to fix. The later forms are probably after French soffite.
Architecture.
The under horizontal face of an architrave or overhanging cornice; the under surface of a lintel, vault, or arch; a ceiling.
