Forms: 1500s suterkyn, 1700s suterkin; 1600s soutterkine, souterkine, soutri-, 1700s souterkin; 1600s– sooterkin.
Etymology: In sense 1 apparently < older Dutch or Flemish *soetekijn (compare Kilian, ‘soetken , dulcis amica, glycerium’), < soet sweet. In sense 2 perhaps < soot n.1; there is apparently no similar term in Dutch.
Now rare.
