单词 sontic
释义

sonticadj.

Forms: 1600s sontic, 1600s–1700s sontick.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sonticus.
Etymology: < classical Latin sonticus valid, genuine, (of a disease) serious enough to excuse a person from attendance at a law court and other public duties < sont- , sōns guilty (see note) + -icus -ic suffix.Classical Latin sōns reflects a present participle formation of the Indo-European base of esse to be (see be v.), although it was apparently no longer perceived as a present participle by speakers of classical Latin. The same Indo-European formation is reflected by the Germanic base of sooth adj. With the semantic shift shown by classical Latin sōns from ‘being, existing’ to ‘guilty’, compare the sense development of Old Icelandic sannr true, guilty (see sooth adj.).
Obsolete.
Of a disease or physical condition: severe, prolonged, and disabling, esp. to a degree which prevents a person from carrying out necessary duties. Also in extended use and figurative.
