attributive. Designating two forms of balsam exported from El Salvador.Sonsonate black balsam was the product known as balsam of Peru, obtained by wounding the tree Myroxylon balsamum var. pereirae. Sonsonate white balsam may have been produced from the fruits of the same tree (cf. quot. 1852), but its exact origin is uncertain.
