单词 sodomitish
释义

Sodomitishadj.

Brit. /ˈsɒdəˌmʌɪtɪʃ/, U.S. /ˈsɑdəˌmaɪdɪʃ/
Forms: Old English–early Middle English Sodomitisc, 1500s Sodomitishe, 1500s Sodomitysh, 1500s Sodomytysh, 1600s– Sodomitish.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin Sodomita , -ish suffix1; Latin Sodomitus , -ish suffix1; sodomite n., -ish suffix1.
Etymology: In sense 1 partly (i) (in Old English) < post-classical Latin Sodomita sodomite n. + -ish suffix1, and partly (ii) (in later use) directly < sodomite n. + -ish suffix1. In sense 2 < post-classical Latin Sodomitus of or relating to Sodom (see sodomite adj.) + -ish suffix1.With Old English Sodomitisc compare also Old English Sodomisc ( < the name of Sodom + -ish suffix1). With later use in sense 1 compare sodomitic adj. and the Dutch and German forms cited at that entry. In Sodomitish sea n. at sense 2 after post-classical Latin mare Sodomitum (Vulgate; compare quot. 1535 at sense 2); compare Hellenistic Greek Σοδομῖτις λίμνη lake of Sodom (Josephus). With this compare also the discussion at sodomitic n.
