Etymology: < scientific Latin Actinia (1752 in the same source as quot. 1752) < ancient Greek ἀκτῖν- , ἀκτίς ray (see actino- comb. form) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix2.
Zoology.
A sea anemone; spec. one of the genus Actinia. Also (in form Actinia): the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Systema naturæ (ed. 12, 1767) 1088; also used by Pallas (1766) for a genus of holothurian.In technical contexts, the word is now restricted to the genus, though the adjective actinian persists in the more general sense.
