Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly, e.g.

Etymology: < classical Latin sonus sound (see sound n.3) + -o- connective. Compare French sono- (formations in which are found from the end of the 17th cent.).Attested earliest at the beginning of the 19th cent. in the French adaptation sonometer n. Formations within English are found from the early 20th cent., e.g. sonograph n.
