Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: boat n.1, shell n.
Etymology: < boat n.1 + shell n.
1. Any of various marine molluscs, esp. gastropods, with boat-shaped shells; esp. (a) a sea snail of the genus Cymbium (formerly known as Cymba) (family Volutidae), whose large, porcelain-like shells are typically tulip-shaped (now rare); (b) a slipper limpet of the genus Crepidula (family Calyptraeidae).
