Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Sonne.
Etymology: < the name of Carl Olaf Sonne (1882–1948), Danish bacteriologist, who described the bacterium in 1915 ( Zentralbl. f. Bakteriol. 75 408, Zeitschr. f. klin. Med. 81 73).
Microbiology.
attributive and (esp. in early use) in the genitive. Designating the Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium Shigella sonnei, and the usually mild form of dysentery caused by it. Cf. Shigella n.
