Origin: A borrowing from Latin; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymon: Latin socius.
Etymology: < classical Latin socius socius n., with ending remodelled after that of speciēs species n.: see quot. 1916 (in which Clements's assumption is that classical Latin socius and sequī ‘to follow’ are cognate). Compare associes n., consocies n.
Ecology.
Esp. in the terminology of F. E. Clements: the equivalent of a society (society n. 9e) in an immature (developmental) plant community.
