Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; originally modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin sociāt- , sociāre , -ive suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin sociāt-, past participial stem of sociāre sociate v. + -ive suffix, originally after German sociativ (1833 in the passage translated in quot. 1845 at sense A.; now soziativ ). Compare post-classical Latin sociative unitedly (9th cent. in a British source), French sociatif , as a grammatical term (1871 as both adjective and noun, in Bréal). Compare associative adj.
