Etymology: Originally < classical Latin sociāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of sociāre to attach as a partner or associate, to unite, to make common cause, to possess jointly, share, to combine, bring together < socius companion (see socius n.). In later use partly aphetic < associate v. Compare Middle French socier to ally (someone to oneself) (1454), French socier to have friendly relations (with someone) (1752). Compare earlier socie v.
