Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymon: tin n.
Etymology: Symbolic abbreviation for tin n., after use as symbolic abbreviation for post-classical Latin stannum stannum n. in the system introduced by Berzelius (see quot. 1813).
