Etymology: medieval Latin (but with different application: see the note to consound n.).
1. A large genus of perennial plants of the N.O. Compositæ, the North American species of which are especially numerous; golden-rod.

2. A plant of this genus, esp. S. virgaurea, a European and British species, formerly in repute for its medicinal properties, now largely cultivated as a garden flower.
