Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French smithsonite.
Etymology: < French smithsonite zinc carbonate ( F. S. Beudant Traité élém. de minéral. (ed. 2, 1832) II. 354, 357) < the name of James Lewis Smithson , English chemist and mineralogist (see Smithsonian adj.), who had studied samples of calamine and found some to consist of zinc silicate and others of zinc carbonate + French -ite -ite suffix1.For the development of the two senses in English, see note at calamine n.
Mineralogy.
1. A mineral consisting of a hydrated silicate of zinc; = hemimorphite n. Obsolete.Cf. calamine n.
