Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps the result of false segmentation of an unattested Cornish compound or phrase (apparently reflected in English by lost slovan) < lost tail, rump (Middle Cornish lost ; < the same Indo-European base as Old Icelandic ljósta to strike: see leister n.) + (perhaps) leven (rare) smooth ( < the same Indo-European base as slime n.).Compare:1778 W. Pryce Mineralogia Cornubiensis 324 Lost-Slovan. (Lost, a tail, a rump, Cornish) Vulgo, Low-slovan; the beginning of an Adit, though the tail or end; that part which lies open like a trench, before they drive under-ground. In low slovan perhaps with reinterpretation after either low adj. or (on account of the water which sometimes gathers at the end of an adit) Cornish †loh creek, pool (cognate with e.g. Scottish Gaelic loch loch n.¹). The phrase lode slovan in quot. 1881 apparently shows reinterpretation of the first element after lode n.
