Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: small adj., man n.1
Etymology: < small adj. + man n.1 Earlier currency is implied by post-classical Latin smalemannus, in the same sense (1130 in a British source; < Old English; compare also smalmolmennus minor rent payer (1272 in a British source)). The word is also attested early as a personal name, e.g. Smaleman de Cobbeham (early 12th cent.), and surname, e.g. Hubert Smaleman (1209) and Richard Smaleman (1275), although the precise sense is unclear.
1. Usually in form smallman. A minor manorial tenant holding land by copyhold. Now historical.Recorded earliest in smallman's land n. a small piece of land held by copyhold (in quot. 1367 apparently as a field name).
