1. Chiefly Economics. Originally: that combination of private and public goods which results in an optimal level of social well-being. Later, more broadly: the point at which multiple variable factors interact to produce the best possible situation; a condition of maximum attainable satisfaction; esp. the level of personal consumption or wealth at which a person's satisfaction is not enhanced (and may be diminished) by any further increase.Quot. 1954 shows a slightly earlier use of the compound attainable-bliss point in the same sense, by the author of quot. 1955.
