单词 skyrsay
释义

skyrsayn.

Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown. It has been suggested (based on variant readings in other manuscripts, which refer to carts or bags) that this word shows an alteration of kersey n., in a specific sense ‘a bag made of that material’. However, neither this form nor apparently this sense of kersey n. are recorded elsewhere. The passage from which the quot. is taken follows the Vulgate text of the book of Joshua, and it is possible that in skyrsays in fact corresponds directly to the Latin in frusta, with a meaning ‘in small pieces’ (compare Joshua 9:5). In that case, readings in other manuscripts represent reinterpretations, but the etymology of the word remains unclear.
Scottish. Obsolete. rare.
Apparently: a bag or cart used to carry things.
