单词 acephalisis
释义

acephalisisn.

Brit. /eɪˌsɛfəˈlʌɪsᵻs/, /eɪˌkɛfəˈlʌɪsᵻs/, U.S. /eɪˌsɛfəˈlaɪsəs/
Forms: 1600s akephalisis, 2000s– acephalisis.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ἀκέϕαλος , -sis suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀκέϕαλος headless (see acephalous adj.) + -sis suffix. The word was apparently re-formed in the early 21st cent. The source cited in quot. 1611 claims that Pope Boniface VIII (1294–1303) used a post-classical Latin form acephalisis in one of his letters to King Edward I. However, this use has not been traced; it is possible that Speed may simply be summarizing the correspondence between the Pope and the King without implying an actual use of the Latin word.
