Etymology: < site v. + -ed suffix1, after classical Latin situs placed, situated (also founded, built, erected), use as adjective of past participle of sinere to leave alone, to grant, admit, to let remain (in a particular condition), to permit, to allow (of uncertain origin; perhaps < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek κτίζειν to found, build: see Protoctista n.).
