Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sistrum.
Etymology: < classical Latin sistrum metal rattle used in the worship of Isis < Hellenistic Greek σείστρον < ancient Greek σείειν to shake (see seismic adj.) + -τρον , suffix forming nouns of instrument. Compare sistre n.The Latin noun was also borrowed into other European languages. Compare Middle French, French sistre (1527), Portuguese sistro (14th cent. as senstro ), Italian sistro (14th cent.). In β. forms with remodelling of the ending after Hellenistic Greek σείστρον; in γ. forms with omission of the ending.
A musical instrument consisting of a thin oval metal frame with transverse metal rods loosely fixed in it and a handle by which the frame is shaken to rattle the rods.Originating in ancient Egypt, the sistrum was used in Egyptian worship, and is still used in some Middle Eastern and African countries.
