Etymology: Apparently < Middle French cistre (although this is first attested slightly later than in English: 1559), alteration (after sistre sistrum n.) of citre (see cither n.). Compare slightly later cittern n.
Scottish. Obsolete.
Apparently: a stringed musical instrument resembling a cittern (cittern n.).In quot. 1538: a person who plays a sistre.
