Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin acephalus , -ia suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin acephalus, in post-classical Latin sense ‘headless’ (see acephalous adj.) + -ia suffix1. In medical use after French acéphalie (1821) or scientific Latin acephalia (1812; already in post-classical Latin in sense ‘absence of a leader’ (1631 or earlier)). Compare acephaly n.
Chiefly Medicine.
Absence of a head, esp. as a congenital malformation. Cf. acephaly n.
