Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: a- prefix6, -centric comb. form.
Etymology: < a- prefix6 + -centric comb. form. With sense 1a compare Hellenistic Greek ἄκεντρος not occupying a cardinal point (already in ancient Greek in senses ‘stingless’, ‘without thorns’, ‘without a spur’). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ăse·ntrik) /əˈsɛntrɪk/.
