单词 sinti
释义

Sintin.adj.

Brit. /ˈsɪnti/, U.S. /ˈsɪn(t)i/
Forms: 1800s– Sinte, 1800s– Sinti.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Either (i) a borrowing from German. Or (ii) a borrowing from Romani. Partly also a borrowing from French. Etymons: German Sinti, Romani Sinti; French Sinté.
Etymology: < (i) German Sinti, †Sinte (late 18th cent. or earlier), or its etymon (ii) Romani Sinti, Sinte, plural (masculine singular Sinto ), self-designation, of unknown origin. In quot. 1827 via French Sinté (1826 as Sinte in the passage translated, citing a work written in German).A commonly suggested relationship with Sindhi n. is unlikely for phonological reasons. Compare the following example of a form Sinte , in a slightly ambiguous context, apparently used to refer to the Sindhi people of South Asia as the putative ancestors of the Romani peoples in Europe, not to the Sinti themselves:1822 tr. C. Malte-Brun Universal Geogr. III. xlvii. 57 The Chinganes..who live near the mouth of the Indus, have been supposed by some modern authors to be the original stock of those bands of wanderers known in Europe under the names of Zingarians, Bohemians, and Gypsies...We are told that some of them call themselves Sintes [Fr. Sintes].However, compare quot. 1827 at sense A. 1, translating a later volume of the same work, where the author compares the Sinti of his time to a (not clearly identified) ancient people mentioned in Herodotus.
