单词 aceldama
释义

Aceldaman.

Brit. /əˈkɛldəmə/, /əˈsɛldəmə/, U.S. /əˈsɛldəmə/, /əˈkɛldəmə/
Forms: 1600s Acaldemy, 1600s Acheldama, 1600s– Aceldama.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek Ἁκελδαμά.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek Ἁκελδαμά (Acts 1:19; more usually Ἁκελδαμάχ (see below); also Ἁχελδαμάχ) < an unattested Aramaic phrase *ḥăqal dĕmā (compare Syriac ḥĕqal dĕmā in the Syriac version of the New Testament, Acts 1:19), literally ‘the field of blood’ < ḥăqal, construct state of ḥaqlā field, field measure + dĕmā, emphatic form of dām blood. Compare post-classical Latin Haceldama (Vulgate: Matthew 27:8, Acts 1:19).According to the New Testament, this was the name given to the potter's field near Jerusalem purchased for use as a cemetery with the blood money received by Judas Iscariot. This seems to have been either because of the association with blood money or the violent death of Judas there: see Matthew 27:3–8, Acts 1:19. Compare potter's field n. at potter n.1 Compounds 2a. Compare the following early examples of the field name in English versions of the Bible (the forms in quots. OE, c1384 reflect the post-classical Latin variant Acheldemach (Vulgate), itself reflecting the Hellenistic Greek variant Ἀκελδαμάχ, whose final χ marks the word as indeclinable):OE West Saxon Gospels: Matt. (Corpus Cambr.) xxvii. 8 Forþam is se æcer gehaten acheldemagh, þæt is on ure geþeode blodes æcyr.c1384 Bible (Wycliffite, E.V.) Acheldemak] in the langage of hem, that is, the feeld of blood [L. appellaretur ager ille lingua eorum Acheldemach, hoc est ager Sanguinis].1526 Bible (Tyndale) Acts i. f. cliiiiv That felde is called in their mother tonge, Acheldema, that is to saye the bloud felde.1611 Bible (King James) Acts i. 19 That field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.
A field of bloodshed; a scene of slaughter or butchery; a wretched place.
