Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek Ἁκελδαμά (Acts 1:19; more usually Ἁκελδαμάχ (see below); also Ἁχελδαμάχ) < an unattested Aramaic phrase *ḥăqal dĕmā (compare Syriac ḥĕqal dĕmā in the Syriac version of the New Testament, Acts 1:19), literally ‘the field of blood’ < ḥăqal, construct state of ḥaqlā field, field measure + dĕmā, emphatic form of dām blood. Compare post-classical Latin Haceldama (Vulgate: Matthew 27:8, Acts 1:19).According to the New Testament, this was the name given to the potter's field near Jerusalem purchased for use as a cemetery with the blood money received by Judas Iscariot.
