Etymology: < post-classical Latin sinistrorsus, adjective (1759 or earlier) < classical Latin sinistrorsus (also sinistrorsum ) (adverb) to the left, contracted < *sinistrōvorsus , < sinistr- , sinister left (see sinister adj.) + -ō , suffix forming adverbs + vorsus , variant of versus versus prep. Compare dextrorse adj.Compare French sinistrorse (1802 or earlier).
