Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sinistrorsus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin sinistrorsus, adjective (1759 or earlier) < classical Latin sinistrorsus (also sinistrorsum ) (adverb) to the left, contracted < *sinistrōvorsus , < sinistr- , sinister left (see sinister adj.) + , suffix forming adverbs + vorsus , variant of versus versus prep. Compare dextrorse adj.Compare French sinistrorse (1802 or earlier).
1. Conchology and Zoology. Designating spiral mollusc shells that coil to the left (anticlockwise), and molluscs having such shells; = sinistral adj. 7a. Now rare.Cf. earlier sinistrorsal adj. 2.

(now somewhat rare).The apparent direction of twining depends upon whether the viewer is taken to be standing within or facing the spiral, leading to the use of the word in opposite senses.
