Etymology: Partly (i) < Anglo-Norman senestrel, Old French sinistral situated on the left (12th cent.; compare senestral (noun) the left (12th cent.)), or its etymon post-classical Latin sinistralis situated on the left, (with reference to map orientation) northern (from early 9th cent. in British and continental sources; < classical Latin sinistr- , sinister sinister adj. + -ālis -al suffix1), and partly (ii) < Old French sinistre or its etymon classical Latin sinistr-, sinister sinister adj. + -al suffix1. Compare dextral adj.In quot. 1889 at sense B. 2 after Ottoman Turkish ṣolaq bodyguard of the sultan, literally ‘a left-handed one’ (see solak n.).
