Etymology: < Swedish skarn lit. ‘dung, filth’, in same sense, < Old Norse skarn (compare northern dialect scarn dung ( Eng. Dial. Dict.)).
Geology.
Originally applied to the silicate gangue of certain Archæan iron-ore or other mineral deposits, esp. where these occur in limestone or dolomite; now extended to any lime-bearing siliceous rock produced by metamorphism (esp. of limestone or dolomite) and the introduction of new elements. Frequently attributive.

1901 H. Louis in Trans. Inst. Mining & Metall. 10 49 I have of late years adopted a very convenient Scandinavian word, skarn, for the zone of altered rock, usually calcareous, that contains such minerals as epidote, schorl, idocrase, at times augite, hornblende, mica, etc., and I speak of these altered rocks as epidote skarn, etc.
1911 Econ. Geol. VI. 708 Very characteristic of this zone, especially in connection with ore deposits, are the ‘scarn’ rocks—iron-rich silicate rocks produced by the addition of iron and silica to limestones.
1932 A. Harker Metamorphism ix. 129 The skarn type of metasomatism is found at numerous British localities, but usually as a narrow belt and with little of the impregnation with sulphides.

Rock-forming Minerals (ed. 2) II a. 661 A number of serendibite..occurrences in spinel-diopside skarns have been described from the Tayezhnoye iron ore localities of southern Yakutia... Serendibite is also found with sinhalite, warwickite and tourmaline..in the skarns of Handemi district, Tanzania.
