Geology.

Originally applied to the silicate gangue of certain Archæan iron-ore or other mineral deposits, esp. where these occur in limestone or dolomite; now extended to any lime-bearing siliceous rock produced by metamorphism (esp. of limestone or dolomite) and the introduction of new elements. Frequently attributive.

Mining & Metall. 10 49 I have of late years adopted a very convenient Scandinavian word, skarn, for the zone of altered rock, usually calcareous, that contains such minerals as epidote, schorl, idocrase, at times augite, hornblende, mica, etc., and I speak of these altered rocks as epidote skarn, etc.

1966 Chem. Abstr. 65 3567 A new mineral, called sakhaite.., was found during study of magnesian skarns in Siberia.

Rock-forming Minerals (ed. 2) II a. 661 A number of serendibite..occurrences in spinel-diopside skarns have been described from the Tayezhnoye iron ore localities of southern Yakutia... Serendibite is also found with sinhalite, warwickite and tourmaline..in the skarns of Handemi district, Tanzania.
