Etymology: < the Germanic base of six adj. + a variant of the Germanic base of tenth adj. showing voicing of *h to *g (by Verner's Law; see further discussion of form types at tenth adj.). Compare Old Icelandic sextugandi (Icelandic sextugasti , with suffix substitution (compare -est suffix), probably after a Middle Low German form), and (with alteration after the cardinal form) Old Swedish siäxtionde (Swedish sextionde ). Some forms in English (including the modern standard form) apparently show re-formation after sixty adj. and -eth (see -th suffix²).Forms in the continental Germanic languages appear typically to show re-formation after the respective cardinal form, with different suffixation (superlative: see -est suffix), as West Frisian sechstichste , Middle Dutch sestichste (Dutch zestichste ), German regional (Low German) sestichste , Old High German sehszugōsto (German sechzigste ).
