Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: < the Germanic base of six adj. + a variant of the Germanic base of tenth adj. showing voicing of *h to *g (by Verner's Law; see further discussion of form types at tenth adj.). Compare Old Icelandic sextugandi (Icelandic sextugasti , with suffix substitution (compare -est suffix), probably after a Middle Low German form), and (with alteration after the cardinal form) Old Swedish siäxtionde (Swedish sextionde ). Some forms in English (including the modern standard form) apparently show re-formation after sixty adj. and -eth (see -th suffix2).Forms in the continental Germanic languages appear typically to show re-formation after the respective cardinal form, with different suffixation (superlative: see -est suffix), as West Frisian sechstichste , Middle Dutch sestichste (Dutch zestichste ), German regional (Low German) sestichste , Old High German sehszugōsto (German sechzigste ). In Old English (and Middle English) there is partial formal overlap with sixteenth adj.; compare e.g. Old English sixteoða, Middle English sixteþe, and parallel forms of other decad ordinals (e.g. Old English feowerteoða at fortieth adj. α. forms, nigonteoða at ninetieth adj. and n. Forms, etc.). However, confusion is unlikely to have occurred in practice as the numerals would have been disambiguated by context, (perhaps) by stress, and (with the decads 70-90) by use of the prefix hund- hund n. 2. See further F. von Mengden Cardinal Numerals (2010) 128.
