Etymology: < black adj. + money n. With sense 1 compare Anglo-Norman noire monoie, Middle French monnoie noire (1335 or earlier), post-classical Latin moneta nigra (1468, 1487 in British sources).
1. Chiefly Scottish. Base silver coins; (hence) copper alloy coins replacing such base coinage; (also) counterfeit money. Obsolete.
