Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: black adj., mass n.1
Etymology: < black adj. + mass n.1 With sense 1 compare French messe noire (1857 or earlier in this sense), German schwarze Messe (1891 or earlier in this sense). In sense 2, the mass is so called from the colour of the vestments formerly worn at it; compare post-classical Latin missa nigra (late 18th cent. or earlier), German schwarze Messe (1829 or earlier in this sense), French messe noire (1837 or earlier in this sense).
