单词 simpulum
释义

simpulumn.

Brit. /ˈsɪmpjᵿləm/, U.S. /ˈsɪmpjələm/
Inflections: Plural simpula Brit. /ˈsɪmpjᵿlə/, U.S. /ˈsɪmpjələ/.
Forms: 1600s sympullum, 1600s sympulum, 1600s– simpulum.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin simpulum.
Etymology: < classical Latin simpulum earthenware ladle or pouring vessel used in religious ceremonies, alteration (after -ulum -ulum suffix) of simpuvium, in the same sense, of uncertain origin; perhaps < ancient Greek σιπύη meal-tub, of uncertain origin (see below), or perhaps a loan < a Semitic language. It has tentatively been suggested that ancient Greek σιπύη could be a loanword from either a pre-Greek substratum language or a Semitic language; with the latter, compare Akkadian šappu, Phoenician sp (probably sap) container for liquids, Hebrew sap basin, goblet.
Roman History.
A small ladle or other vessel used to pour out wine, esp. as an offering to a god.
