Etymology: < simple adj. + -ist suffix, after French simpliste (1836 as adjective, 1842 as noun in this sense; already the 16th cent. in Middle French as noun in the sense ‘herbalist’: see simplist n.). Compare slightly earlier simplism n. With use as adjective compare earlier simplistic adj., simplicist adj.In β. forms influenced by the French form.
