Etymology: < booby n.1 + house n.1, after booby hatch n. and booby-hutch n.
1. Nautical. A removable cover or small companion (companion n.2 1) over a small hatchway giving people access to a lower deck, or to a compartment below the deck. Hence also: a small cabin on the deck of a vessel, or a compartment below the deck. Cf. booby hatch n. 1, booby-hutch n. 2. Now rare.
