Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: side n.1, rope n.1
Etymology: < side n.1 + rope n.1With use in Scots compare forms such as sidribb , seitherip , sithrop , citherope (compare quot. 1978 at sense 1), attested in sense 1 from the 18th cent. onwards in sources from Shetland, Orkney, and Caithness, apparently showing borrowing of Norwegian side reb in the same meaning (for further evidence and discussion see Sc. National Dict. at siderep n.).
1. A trace (trace n.2 2) for a horse or other draught animal. Now historical and rare.
