单词 silenic
释义

Silenicadj.

Brit. /sʌɪˈliːnɪk/, U.S. /saɪˈlinɪk/
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek Σιληνικός.
Etymology: < ancient Greek Σιληνικός of or like Silenus < Σιληνός Silenus n. + -ικός -ic suffix.Compare French silénique (1802 or earlier). Compare also classical Latin Sīlēnicus of or belonging to Silenus (used by Pliny as the name of a kind of ivy).
Resembling Silenus, the tutor and companion of the god Dionysus, or one of the Sileni in having an outwardly or superficially unattractive or unrefined appearance, esp. one that belies an inner value. The trope of likening something which does not have an immediately apparent value to Silenus seems to have its origins in Plato's Symposium 215b, in which Alcibiades likens Socrates, who is physically unattractive but a captivating speaker, to a Silenus figure (see Silenus n. 1a).
