Etymology: < Hindi shila-jit, Sanskrit śilājit, śilājatu bitumen, < Sanskrit śilā rock + jit conquering or jatu essence.
A name given to various solid or viscous substances found on rock in India and Nepal (see quot. 1903), esp. a usually dark-brown odoriferous substance which is used in traditional Indian medicine and probably consists principally of dried animal urine.
