Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Sinae , -an suffix.

Etymology: Irregularly < post-classical Latin Sinae, plural (see note) + -an suffix; perhaps influenced by other adjectives ending in -aean , designating peoples (e.g. Judaean adj., Phocaean adj.). Compare earlier Chinean adj. and Chinean n. Compare also earlier Serian adj. Post-classical Latin Sinae denotes the inhabitants of East Asia in general (1562 in a translation of Ptolemy, or earlier) and also specifically those of China (N. Trigault & M. Ricci 1615; compare quot. 1639); it is < Hellenistic Greek Σίναι , denoting the inhabitants of East Asia (Ptolemy), probably < a language of the Near East (compare Arabic Ṣīn , the name of the empire of China: see China n.¹). The corresponding adjective is Sinensis (see Chinenses n. and compare the passage translated in quot. 1639). Variant forms. In the form Sinean perhaps influenced by -ean suffix.
