Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin significavit.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin significavit, name of certain writs used in ecclesiastical cases, specifically of the writ De excommunicato capiendo authorizing the arrest of an excommunicated person (15th cent., c1470 in British sources) < classical Latin significāvit, 3rd singular perfect indicative of significāre signify v. Compare Middle French significavit (1465).The writ is so called from its opening words: Significavit nobis venerabilis pater N.N. ‘The venerable Father N.N. has made known to us (that the excommunicated person is to be arrested)’.
Ecclesiastical Law. Now historical.
A form of writ employed in ecclesiastical cases; spec. one issued by Chancery for the arrest of an excommunicated person. Also: the bishop's certificate on which such a writ is based.
