Etymology: < post-classical Latin signation-, signatio action of signing with the cross (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian), action of sealing (from c1230 in British sources), indication (from 13th cent. in British sources; also in continental sources) < classical Latin signāt- , past participial stem of signāre sign v.1 + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French signacion, signation signature (1377).
1. The action of sign v.1; esp. the action of blessing or consecrating by making the sign of the cross.
