释义

In sense A. 3b after scientific Latin signatus (1816 (in chrysalis signata ) or earlier in this sense; specific use of classical Latin signātus in its sense ‘to seal’), the pupa being so called because it is fully covered, only its extremities protruding from the cover. In use as noun after post-classical Latin signatum, use as noun of neuter past participle of signāre (1648 in this sense, in the passage translated in quot. 1662 at sense B.; 7th cent. in continental sources in sense ‘boundary marker on a tree’, 13th cent. in British sources in senses ‘signet’ and ‘thing signified’).
