Etymology: < simple adj. + pendulum n.
1. A pendulum consisting only of a bob suspended by a cord or wire, spec.: (a) (in a clock) one which is not equipped with a mechanism that compensates for the effects of heat, friction, etc.; (b) one which is not a part of a mechanism and is designed to approximate an ideal pendulum (see sense 2) for use in measuring gravity or oscillatory phenomena (obsolete).
